He'd obviously used his stylus to draw on the screen. And some of the numbers were written backwards.

"This looks impossible to hack," I said.

"Probably not impossible, but..."

I lifted up the captain's phone and pulled up the camera app. After getting it centered and focused, I pressed the button. I looked at the image for a moment and then showed it to Alex. "That's readable, right?"

He nodded. "Definitely."

I pressed a couple of more buttons and waited as the image uploaded and was marked as sent. Once that was done, I closed the phone and said, "I'm going to give this back to the captain and then I need some help with something."

Alex nodded. "Sure thing, boss."

I rolled my eyes, turned, and headed up to the cockpit.

. . .

Once I was back in my seat, I opened up my bottle of Evian and had a long drink. After I put it away, I turned to Alex and said, "Here's what I need."

He got up and stretched. "Do you mind if I lean over the back of your seat like a vulture?"

I shook my head. "That's fine. But do we really think that's a good reference, considering everything that's going on?"

He grinned as he got on the seat in front of me, facing backwards and propping his arms over the seat back. "I don't think they can fly this high. Whatcha need?"

"I need to figure out how to talk as if Whit and I have broken up."

He took a deep breath and looked out the window. "Good idea." After a moment, he said, "Have you been through this before?"

Using my fingers to make air quotes, I replied, "None of my 'relationships' have ever lasted this long."

He nodded. "When's your anniversary?"

"Our meeting anniversary was last Saturday."

"Of course! Sorry. I knew that." We'd had a party that afternoon and evening. I'd made lasagna for everyone (Billy, Dwayne, Klotz, and Alex) and then we'd all played poker (ever since last September that had become our usual party game). Klotz, who almost never won, ended up taking the entire pot. After everyone left, Whit and I had spent an hour or so in the pool. It was in the 50s outside that evening, so he'd cranked up the heater. It had been a lot of fun.

I grinned. "A lot has happened since then."

"Definitely. When is your wedding anniversary?"

"March the 6th."

His eyes widened a little. "That's only, what, 35, 36 days?"

"Yep. It was a whirlwind romance."

"I never heard why you got married in Georgia."

"Because we didn't want to wait for three days, which is required in Florida if one or both parties are in-state residents."

"Gotcha." His blue eyes studied my face. "Still..."

He was beginning to annoy me, so I shifted gears a little. "If we hadn't gone to Savannah, we wouldn't have met the judge who married us. It turned out he knew what Whit's adoption story might be when he saw Whit's Soviet birth certificate."

"He..." Alex nodded. "That... Wow. That's some good synchronicity there.
